Umatilla, Fla.: Guided by the leadership of the Florida Wing Civil Air Patrol, the inaugural STEM Academy unfolded with exhilarating energy as Civil Air Patrol Cadets  from across the state converged at the scenic Elks Lodge retreat in Umatilla, Florida on the first weekend of February 2024. The air buzzed with anticipation as cadets settled into the rustic cabins nestled by the tranquil lakeside, ready to embark on a journey of discovery and learning.

Helmed by Director of Cadet Programs, Maj. Ann Marie Kozloski, and drawing expertise from squadrons statewide, the event aimed to ignite passions and broaden horizons through the realms of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Maj. Jesse L. Baker, the Aerospace Education Officer of the Marco Island Senior Squadron, led the charge in instructing Robotics—a cornerstone of the immersive curriculum. Over two dynamic days, cadets delved into diverse disciplines, including mechanical engineering, Snaptricity kits, astronomy, and of course, robotics.

"In the robotics module," Maj. Baker recounts, "Cadets were tasked with the challenge of constructing a functional robotic arm and programming it to execute tasks mirroring real-world industrial scenarios. Their enthusiasm was palpable, underscoring their innate curiosity and reverence for scientific exploration."

Beyond mere project construction, the robotics segment served as a gateway to a broader understanding of robotics' pervasive presence in modern society. From space exploration to underwater ventures, from medical innovations to everyday applications, robotics and its convergence with artificial intelligence are reshaping our collective future.

However, robotics was just one aspect of the multi-faceted STEM Academy. Cadets eagerly engaged in hands-on activities, from engineering feats to stargazing escapades. Under the vast expanse of Saturday night's sky, aided by a powerful telescope, they marveled at the celestial wonders, fostering a deeper appreciation for the cosmos.

Highlighting the event's climax was the awe-inspiring moment when cadets, guided by NASA's tracking system, witnessed the majestic trajectory of the International Space Station streaking across the firmament, a poignant reminder of humanity's boundless ingenuity and collaborative spirit.

As the STEM Academy drew to a close on Sunday, a ceremonious awards program celebrated the achievements of participating cadets, with proud parents bearing witness to their children's growth and accomplishments. Maj. Baker reflects, "These young men and women exemplify the spirit of innovation and leadership that defines our future. Investing in their education and empowerment is paramount, and the Civil Air Patrol remains steadfast in its commitment to nurturing the next generation of citizens and trailblazers."

Indeed, the inaugural STEM Academy stands as a testament to the power of education, inspiration, and community, propelling youth towards a future ripe with promise and possibility.

About the Civil Air Patrol:  Founded in 1941, the Civil Air Patrol, longtime all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary, is a member of the Air Force's Total Force. In this role, CAP operates a fleet of 560 aircraft, performs about 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center, and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 82 lives annually. CAP’s 60,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief, and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state, and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and mentor over 25,000 young people currently participating in CAP cadet programs. CAP received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2014 in honor of the heroic efforts of its World War II veterans. CAP also participates in Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor, and teach about the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans.
